”This is America, there is no reason to lie, cheat, steal, unless you wanna be awesome but don't fuck people over to get to the middle. You betray everything America is about, we didn't throw Britain’s tea into the ocean because we wanted to be a mediocre country and we didn’t let those fuckers line up in a line and then shoot 'em in the back because we didn't want to be one of the best countries in the world and we're not giving China an "I owe you" because we actually planning on paying it back. This is America the land of opportunity to fuck people over, take what isn't yours but only if you planning on getting to the top of the mountain and waving what you have, and they don’t, in their face.” –Philip Defranco-This is America

This is a very extreme view of the American capitalist system. American's dumping Britain's tea into the ocean and killing people lined up shows America's disregard for others who are in the way. The reference to America's debt to China alludes to the possibility of future conflict. Currently America isn't and will not be in a position in which they will be able to pay back China, therefore it is likely that there will be some form of conflict to resolve the debt. The rant brings light to the fact that many of the opportunities provided in America can take advantage of other people and businesses for the personal gain of individuals. It also implies that people and businesses take advantage of others to get to the top.

This is a really interesting view on the American way of doing things. It is by no means wrong in any sense, but an extreme exaggeration. It sheds light, however, on some aspects of our culture that shouldn’t make us proud, such as not paying back debt and hurting other people to get to the top. The style the author uses is interesting as well. He curses several times to get his point across. By using vulgar words, he is joking in a sense, but the extreme of the words suggests a lot of truth behind the accusations.

The author of this quote is stating how America today is different from when it was first founded. America used to be a country that fought for freedom and fought for their rights. Now, America is in debt, crime rates are up, and morals are fading away. The author is conveying a message that says America today is not what was in the minds of the forefathers. Also, I think the author is portraying completely how American citizens think they are more superior to people from other nations. Americans have always had a sense of dominance, even though we are completely ignorant to other nations’ problems and conflicts. The United States are known as a land of freedom, and almost every American brags about this. We think we are better than other people, but this is not true.

Philip Defranco is ranting about how America is falling apart. Citizens of the United States have privileges that others dream of having. And yet we are making ourselves look bad by not being able to pay China back because of our immense amount of debt. We look like we're taking advantage of other countries. He uses profane language to grab the listener's or reader's attention. The speech also shows the anger and irritation in his voice. He wants Americans to choose sides and not be wishy-washy. However, this is an extreme view of America's faults.

I completely agree with what Charrear said. America has turned its back on its foundations. We were a country that was made on the belief that everyone was equal, and that everyone deserves to be free. Today we are the complete opposite. We are a country that doesn't care about its citizens, and the way we act towards each other. We as citizens are willing to push and shove anyone in our way in order to get to the top. What we need to realize is that we need to stop being so ignorant and only caring about ourselves. We need to begin to return back to our original beliefs. Although I believe this view to be correct, I also agree that this is an extreme view of America.

Phillip Defranco's rant regarding American society, although exaggerated, does ring slightly true. He's talking about Americans as people who are willing to cut corners and cheat in order to get ahead. He brings up the 13 colonies tactics of defeating the British, pointing out the ways in which we tricked the british and used what could be considered unfair warfare tactics in order to fight them off. Defranco talks about Americans as continuing these traits into modern day society, that people are still willing to do whatever it takes to get to the top of whichever ladder they want to climb. i believe that cheating and cutting corners in America can and has helped people get ahead, at least for a while, but i do not believe that this is always the case. Although these kinds of tactics have been used in the past of America's history, and even though some people use unfair tactics to get ahead in life today, i don't think that is reason to believe that all Americans are willing to act in this fashion.

KINDRA SAMONS: Philip Defranko's tone and language begin to set the scene for the listener and immediately cathes their attention. His vulgarity and language set a negative tone by saying America is basically a joke and we are full of ourselves. We hold our noses up too high in the air because we think we are better than everyone else, although we are in debt and have nothing to pay China back with. He uses the tea party as a reference in the past to almost explain how we haven't really gotten better, but we've gotten worse.

ANDY BISHOP: Phillip Defranco's rant does have some backing but I hope this is not about every American because not everyone cheats. America has some great human beings who are kind and honest but there are those few who are selfish and only care how they succeed even if it is at the cost of others. Defranco talks about how these tactics worked in the past but every now and then it is time for a change of our ways. In a way I think he is trying to tell the "dirty" people to change their ways because it won't always work and most people are fed up with the nonsense. I hope we all take a step back and view how we have cut corners to get to the top. I hope we relize when we cut corners and are unfair to others in the future. Then we can stop and correct ourselves and become better human beings.
